About House Proud: Strengthening Communities One Home at a Time

For seniors and veterans, homeownership represents more than just a roof over their heads—it’s a connection to their community, a place of comfort, and a legacy of a lifetime of hard work. However, as homeowners age, maintaining a safe and livable home can become overwhelming. Rising costs, limited mobility, and financial hardship often prevent them from making necessary repairs, leaving them vulnerable to unsafe living conditions or even displacement.

That’s where House Proud steps in.

For over two decades, House Proud has been a lifeline for Atlanta’s (and now Birmingham’s) most vulnerable legacy homeowners, providing no-cost home repairs that ensure they can age in place safely, with dignity and stability. With the help of generous volunteers, skilled contractors, corporate sponsors, and community partners, House Proud has transformed hundreds of homes, revitalized neighborhoods, and strengthened communities—one house at a time.

If you’re considering sponsoring House Proud as part of your philanthropic, CSR, or community engagement efforts, we want to get to know you better. You can start by filling out this simple interest form:

Our Mission: Keeping Homes Warm, Safe, and Dry

At House Proud, our mission is simple but powerful: to provide no-cost home repairs for low-income senior and veteran homeowners, ensuring they can remain in the homes and neighborhoods they love.

By tackling critical repairs that directly impact health, safety, and accessibility, we help prevent displacement, support legacy homeowners, and create a stronger foundation for the future of Atlanta and Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods.

Our work focuses on three key priorities:

Keeping Homes Warm – Repairing and replacing heating and cooling systems, installing thermostats, and ensuring homes are energy-efficient.

Keeping Homes Safe – Installing exterior handrails, repairing steps and porches, performing minor electrical repairs, and replacing rotted wood.

Keeping Homes Dry – Fixing plumbing leaks, repairing fascia/soffit, installing ADA-compliant grab bars and toilets, and exterior painting to protect homes from the elements.

Through these essential repairs, we are preserving community history, preventing displacement, and ensuring that seniors and veterans can remain in their homes safely for years to come.

Our History: A Legacy of Service

House Proud began in 1992 as Community Redevelopment Inc. (CRI), a Georgia-based nonprofit created to provide home repair assistance for seniors in need. As the organization grew, it expanded to include a tool lending library (now known as the Atlanta Community ToolBank), providing resources for volunteers and homeowners alike.

In 2006, CRI officially rebranded as House Proud Atlanta, reaffirming its commitment to legacy homeowners by offering high-quality, no-cost repairs that focused on functionality, safety, and community preservation.

By 2011, House Proud became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, expanding its services to reach more homes and neighborhoods in need. Today, House Proud has made an even greater impact by partnering with local governments, corporate sponsors, and community organizations to serve even more legacy homeowners in Atlanta and Birmingham.

Our Team: Small But Mighty

House Proud is driven by a small but dedicated team, a committed Board of Directors, and a passionate network of volunteers, skilled contractors, and corporate sponsors. We are led by our executive director, Lisa Flowers Jones.

Every day, our team works with local leaders, businesses, and community groups to identify homeowners in need, assess repair priorities, and coordinate volunteers and funding to ensure the work gets done. From our contractors who perform expert repairs to the corporate teams who join us for Community Improvement Days, House Proud is built on collaboration, dedication, and a deep commitment to serving others.

Our work is also made possible through key partnerships with organizations like The Home Depot Foundation, the Atlanta Regional Commission, Rocket Community Fund, the Birmingham City Council, and countless corporate sponsors and donors, all of whom share our mission of keeping communities strong and homeowners safe.
